PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Defiance College continued to play strong defense to back up solid performances on the mound during its time in Port Charlotte and used that combination to pull off a doubleheader sweep against the Muskingum Muskies on Tuesday afternoon.
Jason Farr (1-1) set the tone in the opener, as the southpaw hurler held MU hitless through 5.2 innings of work and tossed a shutout into the seventh inning, before Muskingum finally mounted a rally. The threat was quickly turned away by Todd O'Dell, as the sophomore induced a double play and sealed the 4-2 victory with a harmless fly ball.
Farr earned his first victory on the mound for Defiance College by working six strong innings and allowing just one earned run. The Key Largo, Florida, native struck out a pair of Muskies, while yielding three hits and two walks.
The offense gave Farr a cushion to work with by plating a run in the first inning, before adding insurance tallies in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Brent Kremer led the offense by going 2-3 with an RBI, while Tim Pitro and Kirk Jesse each scored a pair of runs and Alex Timofeev added a run batted in.
The Yellow Jackets struck first in the second game as well, pushing single runs across in the first and second frames, before Braden Brugler busted open a 2-2 tie with a three-run triple in the top of the fourth inning that put DC in front to stay.
Casey Kahsen also had a big game at the dish, going 3-3 with two runs scored and Jesse stayed hot with a run scored, two hits and two stolen bases.
Matt Kaighin (1-0) pitched in and out of trouble in his five innings on the bump, allowing just two runs despite walking five batters and giving up five hits. O'Dell earned his second save of the day by pitching around three hits in his one inning of work to close out the 5-3 victory for Defiance.
The Jackets (3-1) will be back on the diamond on Wednesday with a single contest with Kenyon (2-1) at 9:00 am.
