Walp joins Yellow Jackets Volleyball as assistant coach
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College volleyball has added assistant coach Breanna Walp to the coaching staff, head coach Jeremy Thornburg and the Athletic Department announced on Tuesday.
Walp joins the Yellow Jackets after a five-year playing career at the Division I level and coaching club volleyball. A middle blocker from Portland, Texas, Walp played her first two years of college volleyball at the University of Texas-Arlington before playing the next two seasons at the University of North Florida followed by one graduate season at Syracuse. In her career, she recorded 838 kills and recorded 505 total blocks, including a North Florida school record of 148 blocks in 2021 that placed her in the top 10 nationally. In addition to her accomplishments on the court, Walp was a valuable leader on her teams by serving as a two-year captain at North Florida and an all-conference performer in the classroom.
As a coach, Walp has served as a club volleyball head coach and assistant coach. She was an assistant for the ACE Volleyball Club in Arlington during the 2019-20 club season. This past club season, she was the head coach for Abyss Volleyball Club based in San Antonio. DC is her first collegiate coaching position.
Walp earned her bachelor's in business administration marketing in 2022 and focused on project management as a graduate student at Syracuse. She joins forces with Coach Thornburg in his first season leading the Yellow Jackets volleyball programs.
"I'm excited to welcome Bre to the Defiance Volleyball staff and community," said Coach Thornburg. "She brings a wealth of knowledge from her collegiate experience at some high-level NCAA Division I institutions. Her experience as a middle will help with our frontcourt defense and she will help teach our hitters and setters how to diversify our offense. I'm grateful she has chosen to begin her collegiate coaching career as a Yellow Jacket."
The Yellow Jackets open the 2024 campaign at home as part of a two-day invitational on August 16 and 17 at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
