GREENWOOD, Ind. – For the fourth time this season a Defiance volleyball player has come away with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week on offense, after Alicia Kalik (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) was selected on Monday.
Kalik has now been chosen two times in 2013, three for her career, and senior Chelsea Ludeman has also been selected twice.
The junior setter reached the 2,500 career assists milestone on Saturday that was the icing on the cake to an outstanding week of play by the Purple and Gold volleyball squad.
In one of her more quiet performances of the season, Kalik accounted for 26 assists and six digs in Wednesday's shutout of Earlham. However, with a lot on the line in a pair of contests against Transylvania and Washington and Lee this weekend, the South Lyon High product came to play.
Kalik racked up 39 assists, 10 digs, two block assists and one service ace in a big four-set victory over the Pioneers that pushed DC into the driver's seat for regular-season conference title. The win also ended a three-game skid to Transy.
The junior then came out in the second match against the Generals and performed even better. Kalik recorded 49 assists, 16 digs, three total blocks and ace in the 3-1 win over W&L. Kalik's total pushed her to 2,545 career assists and has the Defiance College record of 2,667 in sight.
The junior's totals from the week moved Kalik into the lead in the HCAC in assists and assists per game and give her the team lead in double-doubles with eight.
Defiance will return to its home court this Wednesday, October 16 for a matchup with the Manchester Spartans. The night game is slated to begin at 7 pm.
