MARIETTA, Ohio – The Defiance College women's soccer team got off to a quick start and made the most of it, defeating the Pioneers of Marietta College, 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets (2-0-1) came into the Marietta Tournament on the heals of a recent win to end the Purple and Gold Classic last weekend. They faced-off against the Pioneers (0-3-0) looking to expand on their winning ways.
Freshman Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green) got things started early for DC, scoring her second goal of the season just nine minutes into the game. Memmer was able to put away a shot from 12 yards out over the goalkeeper for the score to lead 1-0.
Marietta's offense then tried to push the issue, taking the last eight shots of the first half. Two of those shots were on net, but June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood) turned both chances away.
The Yellow Jackets took the 1-0 lead into the half.
DC did more damage early in the second half. Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas / Lockhart) found Lindsay Bubnick (Vandalia, Ohio / Butler) at the 18-yard line. Bubnick took the pass and found the lower left corner for the goal as the Yellow Jackets held a commanding 2-0 lead with just over 40 minutes left to play.
Bubnick nearly scored her second goal of the match just four minutes later. She let go of another shot that hit off the crossbar before being cleared by the Marietta defense.
Delgreco and her defense took care of the rest to complete the shutout. Delgreco saved four more shots the second half, totaling six for the game.
DC completed its first shutout of the season and achieved its second straight win.
The Yellow Jackets will try to continue their winning ways tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 6) as they stay in Marietta to play The College of Wooster. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
