LIVONIA, Mich. - Defiance College visited Madonna at University Field on Wednesday evening for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference showdown; the Crusaders went 2-0 on the day against the Yellow Jackets.
Game 1: Defiance 4, Madonna 9
Both the Yellow Jackets (9-31, 2-16 WHAC) and Crusaders started slow on offense, as both the top and bottom of the first inning consisted of a single run and RBI for Madonna (33-6, 16-0 WHAC). With the bases loaded, its fourth batter advanced on a hit-by-pitch scenario, which allowed a run on the board.
In the third inning, three hits from Defiance gave it a 2-1 lead. Kaylee Heath contributed majorly as her single brought in both Haley Hughes and Emma Rodgers. However, the No. 1 team in the WHAC stormed back to regain the advantage at the bottom of the inning with its own three runs, and again at the bottom of the fourth.
The Jackets put two more runs up in the fifth inning as a sacrifice fly from Heath brought Madison Guggenbiller home. Anika Craft followed with a ground out to second base and RBI; Hughes advanced home for the second time in the contest. With DC now behind by three, a pair of runs for the Crusaders in the sixth solidified the home team's win.
Game 2: Defiance 0, Madonna 11 (5 innings)
The second contest between Defiance and Madonna featured lopsided scoring. Defensively, the Jackets shut out the Crusaders in the second and fifth innings, but they were able to pile on three runs in the first, seven in the third inning and a final run in the fourth, while limiting DC to two hits. Heath and Emma Linn each notched hits.
