DEFIANCE, Ohio - Defiance College's season-opening series against the Huntington Foresters ended in nail-biting fashion on Tuesday night, as the Green and Black claimed both victories at Defiance High School.
The Foresters (2-0) shutout the Yellow Jackets 8-0 in game one, however, the bats started swinging for DC (0-2) in the second game until Huntington rallied for the comeback win in the seventh inning, 9-8.
Huntington started off quickly at the top of the first with six hits and a walk off of Anika Craft, turning into two runs for the Foresters. Defiance's third out in the bottom of the first came after a pop fly by Kaylee Heath. With Huntington back at bat and one out, Carli Tharp hit an in-the-park homerun out to right field, scoring on the double-error play. Four batters later, a triple from Maddie Gohen brought in two runners. The bottom of the second featured two strikeouts by swinging and a pop fly by Madelynn Vickers to third base.
The Yellow Jackets defense held the Foresters to three up, three down in the third and fifth innings, while Defiance's offense earned spots on base twice through the seventh, including a double to the left-field fence by catcher Anna Emswiler.
Craft finished her senior-season debut with eight hits on 127 pitches with four errors.
