CINCINNATI, Ohio – Defiance recorded just one hit and no runs in a 2-0 loss at Mount St. Joseph (5-23; 3-8 HCAC) on Friday. The game one loss was followed by a postponement of game two due to rain. The rescheduled date for game two has yet to be determined.
DC's first 10 batters were retired by MSJ's senior pitcher, Brittany Cohill, who held the Jackets without a run for the first time since March 30 against Ohio Northern University.
Defiance finally got a base runner in the fourth inning, when Mallory Faling reached on the first of Cohill's four walks in the game. Marah Robinson picked up DC's lone hit in the same inning, a shot to left field that pushed Faling to third base and gave DC two runners in scoring position with two outs. Cohill struck out the Jackets' next batter to escape the inning undamaged.
Mount St. Joseph recorded a run in the first inning on a RBI single from Megan McCullough and added another in the sixth, once again on a RBI single from McCullough, to claim the 2-0 margin. DC's Shauna Bowers tallied eight strikeouts while allowing just seven hits in the game, but came away with the loss to drop to 7-7 this season.
The Yellow Jackets, now 2-9 in away games this season, will remain on the road and play at conference-leading Transylvania University (18-11-1; 11-1 HCAC) on Saturday, April 23. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
