Offensive Struggles Lead to Pair of Losses in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Yellow Jackets' bats never woke up in DC's doubleheader against Culver-Stockton College and Waynesburg University on Wednesday morning. Defiance fell, 1-0, against Culver-Stockton in game one, before dropping a 2-0 decision to Waynesburg in game two. DC falls to 3-5 on the season.

Kelly Schnipke got the start for Defiance against Culver-Stockton, and held the Wildcats scoreless on just four hits through the first three innings. After surrendering a lead-off double to start the fourth inning, Schnipke was relieved by Shauna Bowers, who induced three-straight groundouts to escape the inning without any damage.

Bowers would proceed to hold the Wildcats scoreless over the next two innings, but the Jackets couldn't capitalize with any run support, recording just two hits while leaving eight base runners stranded. The Jackets had runners on base with one or fewer outs in five-of-seven innings, but Culver-Stockton's junior pitcher, Emily Anderson, found a way out each time on the way to her second win of the season.

Mallory Faling did her part offensively, reaching base safely in three-of-four at bats with one hit and a pair of walks. Tasha Stucke recorded DC's only other hit of the contest, giving the senior shortstop a hit in seven-straight games this season and 10-straight since the end of the 2010 season.

The offensive struggles continued in game two, as Defiance fell, 2-0, to Waynesburg, marking DC's first time to post back-to-back scoreless outings since March, 2007. A box score for the Waynesburg game will be posted as soon as it is available.

Defiance will conclude its 2011 Florida road trip with a pair of games against Marietta College (3-3) and Albion College (5-3) tomorrow at 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. respectively.
