Wrestling wraps up weekend at Manchester's Spartan Mat Classic
NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Defiance College wrestling team competed in the Spartan Mat Classic on Saturday, hosted by Manchester University. Among 23 schools, the Yellow Jackets posted 9.0 team points for 18th. Wabash College placed first with 153.5 points.
Three grapplers recorded points for the Yellow Jackets, led by Jack Minner with a pair of victories. Competing at 184 pounds, the Defiance senior pinned his opening-round opponent in 51 seconds. He fell by fall in the second round in 2:43 to the 184 champion Nicholas Brashear from Huntingdon. Minner won his third match by pin in 1:03. He was taken down by fall to wrap up his day in the third round of the 184 consolation.
Senior Alejandro Castro received a bye and lost his first round before he turned in a victory via fall in 1:36. Castro was pinned in his third match in 25 seconds to finish 1-2 for the day.
Senior heavyweight Rigo Villa competed at 285 for DC and picked up his first win of the year by an 8-1 decision Manchester's Nico Torres. He dropped his next two by fall to finish the competition with a 1-2 personal record.
Lesley Fleurissaint (285), Kelvin Ruffin (197), Joey Perez (184), Kliever Joseph (149), Brent Eicher (149) and Brandon Ruiz (141) were all bounced after two defeats at their respective weight classes.
Defiance wrestles in Cleveland next Saturday at the SI Ostrach Duals hosted by Case Western Reserve. Competition begins at 11 a.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
