Jackets handled by Cornerstone, 7-1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Defiance College men's soccer was dealt a 7-1 loss on Saturday to the Cornerstone Golden Eagles at the CU Soccer Field on Saturday following a week off from competition.

The Yellow Jackets (0-15, 0-9 WHAC) registered a goal for the fourth straight game following six straight shutouts. The Golden Eagles (5-7-1, 4-5-0 WHAC) snapped a three-game drought for their third straight win at home.

Cornerstone had a pair of quick-strike scores to build a large lead but Defiance cut into the advantage right out of the halftime break. Jack Stainoikovich posted Defiance's lone goal during the 48th minute to give him his first goal since Sept. 1 at Olivet.

THE TURNING POINT
Cornerstone held a 1-0 lead for most of the first half following the first score of the contest in the sixth minute. The Golden Eagles took command of the contest in the 35th minute when they punched through two goals just seconds apart by Renan Ceccon and Tyler Cortsange. That episode repeated itself just before the half when Cortsange netted his second goal of the game in the 44th minute ahead of Shane Renshaw's score off the ensuing kickoff.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Cornerstone recorded 26 shots compared to seven for Defiance. DC had four different players get a shot off.
• Fouls were nearly even with Cornerstone committing one more than Defiance, 8-7.
• The goal for Jack Stanoikovich was his team-leading third goal of the season.
• Will Gehlhausen recorded his first assist of the season on his feed on Stanoikovich's goal.
• Zach Canterbury spent the entire game in goal for Defiance and halted nine Cornerstone shots, matching his season-best for the fourth time.
• Cornerstone's Tyler Corstange recorded a hat trick with his two first-half goals followed by a third in the 69th minute.
• Calvin Curtis closed the scoring for Cornerstone after he set up two previous goals for the Golden Eagles.
