
Theissler posts top-5 finish at Yellow Jacket Invite
WAUSEON, Ohio - The Defiance College men's golf team completed the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Ironwood Golf Course on Monday as both DC teams improved on their start to the tournament on Sunday.
Freshman Sam Theissler finished with back-to-back 77s on Sunday and Monday to earn a top-5 finish at 154 for the tournament. He posted one birdie on each the front and back nine to highlight his round.
DC's A Team posted a 315 for the second day, falling one stroke shy of Rochester Christian for second place. Jordan Walford dipped from 77 to 83 to finish the tournament but managed a top-10 finish at 160. Freshman Alex Moritz shot a season-low 77 as well and closed the tournament at 161. Zack Palmer also tied his career best with a second-round 79, finishing the tournament with a 163 thanks to four birdies on the day. Brendan Garvin played a clean back-9 with a 39 and completed the round at 82 to finish at 164 and 14th.
The Jackets' B Team shaved four strokes off their Sunday score for 359, ending the tournament at 722. Sam Boyles broke 90 with an 88 and closed the tournament at 174. Bretton Basford followed with a 181. Cooper Sloan cloned his Sunday score of 92 to finish at 184. Brodee McMahan set a new personal best with an 88 on Monday to finish the tournament at 185. Zach Canterbury also repeated his Sunday score with a 95 on Monday for 190.
Indiana Tech captured the team title with a 610 tournament, bettering their Sunday 308 with a team round of 302 on Monday. Indiana Tech's Ashton Hoffbauer overcame a six-stroke deficit to capture medalist honors. He rebounded from a 79 and posted an even-par 72 on Monday for the victory, which was by one stroke over a trio of golfers at 152.
Defiance has three more rounds this week with a one-day tournament at Lourdes on Wednesday followed by Friday and Saturday at UNOH's Spring Invite in Bluffton.
