Yellow Jackets defeated in exhibition contest at Purdue Fort Wayne
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In the team's third exhibition contest of the season, the Defiance Yellow Jackets shouldered a 103-52 loss to the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons on Friday at the Gates Center.
The Yellow Jackets' (3-9, 1-6 WHAC) record is not impacted with the loss but the Mastodons (9-4, 2-1 Horizon) won their fourth straight and remain unbeaten on their home floor this season. Friday's contest was the second time DC has traveled to PFW for an exhibition, which last occurred in 2017.
Purdue Fort Wayne had command of the game for 39 of 40 minutes, trailing only after Jalen Brown converted three straight free throws to grab a 3-2 lead for DC. The Yellow Jackets remained within one possession for the first five minutes of the game with the help of a step-back 3-pointer by Brown and a score at the rim by Evan Angstmann. After the score stood 11-10, the Mastodons put the pedal down and took off on a 15-0 run over the next six minutes while forcing five missed shots by DC with five turnovers.
After the Mastodons rolled into halftime with a 56-26 lead on 58 percent shooting, they racked up 47 more in the second half and finished the game with 13 3-pointers for their first 100-point performance of the year. Purdue Fort Wayne committed zero turnovers compared to 25 by DC. The Yellow Jackets were outrebounded by just one, 33-32. Despite those numbers, Defiance shot 46 percent from the floor while the Mastodons finished at 53 percent for the game.
Carter Sudhoff recorded a team-best eight points for Defiance and added five rebounds. Zahyem Bradwell had a solid evening on both ends with seven points, including a 3-pointer, and a team-best six boards. Jalen Brown, Dre'Sean Roberts and Devonte Curry all added six points apiece. Defiance worked all 14 dressed players into the game and 11 of them got the ball through the cylinder.
