DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College baseball program saw its 2011 season come to an end on Saturday, with a doubleheader at Craig A. Rutter Field against Mount St. Joseph. The Jackets fell 8-3 and 12-0 to finish the year.
The afternoon started with Matt Kaighin, Dan Samuels and Alex Timofeev being honored as the three seniors on the 2011 squad. Kaighin then took the mound and fired 140 pitches to post his fourth complete game of the year.
The Mount rallied for four of its eight runs in the first two frames, before Kaighin settled in and yielded just one more score through six innings. MSJ then got to a fatigued Kaighin for three in the seventh to open up an 8-2 cushion. The Jackets countered with one in the bottom of the seventh, before falling by the 8-3 margin.
Bobby Pardun reached base in all four trips to the plate, lacing a single and a double and working a pair of walks. Pardun also scored once and drove home one run.
The Lions continued to roll in game two, earning a trio of unearned runs to take a 5-0 lead in the fifth and tacking on seven runs in the final two frames to break the game open.
Darin Waterman pitched 5.1 innings and allowed only two earned runs, despite departing with a 5-0 deficit. Waterman added seven strikeouts to end with a team-leading 47 during his freshman season.
Timofeev ended his career with a 2-4 showing at the plate, including a single in his final at bat and Dan Samuels also collected a hit in his final game.
Defiance finishes the season 6-32 overall and 2-21 in league play. The Jackets are set to return 30-of-33 members from the 2011 roster, including eight offensive starters and over 80 percent of the innings pitched.
