ADRIAN, Mich. – Defiance College overcame an early four-run deficit at Adrian College on Wednesday evening to score a 6-5 victory over the Bulldogs. The non-conference win snapped a five-game slide for the Yellow Jackets.
AC jumped in front with a tally in the first inning and added three more runs in the bottom of the third to push the spread to 4-0 in favor of the hosts.
The Jackets battled back in their ensuing at bat however, as Alex Timofeev and David Riley singled to open the frame. An Adrian fielding error plated the first run for Defiance and Brad Kremer stroked a two-run double to narrow the margin to 4-3. Kremer would later score the tying run on a run-producing ground out off the bat of Aaron Helland to cap the four-run rally.
DC took the lead for good in the next inning when Riley split the left-center gap for a double that scored Timofeev. Brad Kremer then singled in the eighth and later trotted home, after Brent Kremer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Yellow Jackets the 6-4 edge.
Jake Taylor would make the lead hold, as he pitched around a jam in the bottom of the ninth to strikeout the final two Bulldog hitters to end the game and seal the 6-5 Defiance win. Taylor turned in a strong bounce back performance for the Purple and Gold by striking out four and holding Adrian to one run in his four innings to earn his second save of the season.
Alex Schomaeker also pitched well out of the bullpen and earned his first collegiate win on the mound by tossing a pair of scoreless frames at the Bulldogs.
Riley and Brad Kremer led the offense, as Riley went 3-4 with a run scored and one driven in and Kremer added two hits, drove home a pair and scored two more.
DC (5-17, 1-6 HCAC) will get back into league action this weekend, when it hosts Earlham (8-12, 1-6 HCAC) for a three-game set beginning Saturday at noon.
