Cougars Outslug Defiance in 28-19 Game
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Playing four games and 35 innings in four days proved to be too much for a young Yellow Jacket pitching staff to handle, as Defiance surrendered 28 runs at the University of Saint Francis on Sunday afternoon in a 28-19 defeat.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Playing four games and 35 innings in four days proved to be too much for a young Yellow Jacket pitching staff to handle, as Defiance surrendered 28 runs at the University of Saint Francis on Sunday afternoon in a 28-19 defeat.
The bats were smoking hot all day long, as the two teams combined to hit .485 with 48 total hits in nine full innings while crossing the plate 47 times. The game also featured a pair of 12-run innings with USF plating an even dozen in the bottom of the third and Defiance accomplishing the feat in the top of the seventh.
Each team scored once in the first before things began to heat up with a five-run second for USF. The lead then grew to 18-2 in favor of the Cougars as St. Francis exploded in the third inning. Things did not stop there as St. Francis plated five more in the fourth and led 26-4 after five full innings of play.
The Yellow Jackets fired back to make things interesting with a 12 spot in the seventh and added another in the eighth and two more in the ninth, but the 22-run, fifth-inning deficit was too steep to overcome.
Lenny Koesters, Brad Timofeev and LeTroy Harris each had four-hit games to lead the hit parade for the Jackets and Kirk Jesse, Tim Pitro and Mike hill added three each. In all, nine different DC players collected at least one hit and seven had multi-hit games.
Defiance (6-12) will be back at home on Tuesday when it hosts Ohio Northern (6-10) at 4:00 pm
