DC swept by No. 12 Aquinas
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets suffered a second-straight three-set loss in Michigan as the Aquinas College Saints remained unbeaten in WHAC competition.
The Yellow Jackets (7-9, 1-4) have now dropped 6 of 7 matches and look to regroup at Concordia on Wednesday. The Saints improved to 18-1 and 5-0 in conference play to improve their 12th-ranked resume in the NAIA. DC had a second straight match of hitting below .100 while the Saints were efficient with a .255 average for the afternoon and had two players with double-digit kills.
THE TURNING POINT
Defiance held a 22-18 lead in the first set before Aquinas rallied to capture Set 1, 25-23. Following a serve error by DC, the Saints employed three aces and three kills to make up the ground necessary. They carried this momentum over into the second set by jumping out to an 11-4 lead and led by as many as nine points to take a two-set lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Defiance had their best hitting set of the day in the first set of the match, converting 9 kills on 35 total attacks with just 2 errors, resulting in a .200 hitting percentage. They went on to hit .000 or below in each of the next two while the Saints improved set-by-set.
- Jamia Murray and Shelby Clements led the squad with six kills apiece. Clements also recorded 10 digs on the other end.
- Kaylee Dickinson had 11 digs to lead the team on that side of the ball.
- Jaelyn Tomoletz combined for four total blocks, one solo and three assisted.
UP NEXT
The Yellow Jackets travel back to Michigan with a visit to Ann Arbor on Wednesday night. The first serve at the Cardinal Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7 p.m.
