DC Volleyball Swept by Transy
LEXINGTON, KY. -- The Defiance College volleyball team dropped a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup in straight sets to Transylvania (Ky.) University on Saturday afternoon.
LEXINGTON, KY. -- The Defiance College volleyball team dropped a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup in straight sets to Transylvania (Ky.) University on Saturday afternoon.
After a kill from Jenni Davis (Delta) gave DC a 6-5 opening set edge, the Pioneers went on a 5-1 spurt to take an 11-7 lead. Defiance clawed the deficit to within two points on two occasions before the Pioneers grew the lead back to 19-13. From there, Sydney Unger (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Central) used her serve, as well as a well-balanced offensive attack to score five straight points to get it to within one point (20-19). Transy pulled away, though, scoring five of the final seven points to take the set, 25-21.
The Pioneers jumped to an early 12-6 edge to open the second set. Junior Brooke Plummer (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) wrapped up a quick 3-0 spurt with a kill for DC to cut the deficit in half, 12-9. Transylvania pulled away from there, however, going on a 13-7 run to take the second set, 25-16.
After Plummer began the third set with a kill, Transylvania rallied for nine straight points to open a quick 9-1 lead. Plummer broke the streak with another kill, but Transy added seven straight points again to take a commanding 16-2 lead en route to dropping set three, 25-5.
Jessi Davis (Delta) led the DC offense with six kills, while Jenni Davis and Marissa Windau (Castalia/Margaretta) added five. Abigail Cronin (Lambertville, Mich./Cardinal Stritch Catholic) finished with six digs to lead the defense, while also adding nine assists. Sophomore Madison Hollis (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) was the leading setter with 10 assists.
