DC closes 2024 season with shutout loss at Lourdes

SYLVANIA, Ohio - In its final match of the 2024 season, Defiance College was held scoreless against Lourdes at Wildcat Stadium on Wednesday night. 

Throughout the course of the game, the Gray Wolves (12-3-1, 9-3 WHAC) held the Yellow Jackets (0-18, 0-12 WHAC) to just 2 opportunities at the net. Meanwhile, making her way through an improved Defiance defense, Sophia Larabee of Lourdes scored her first career hat trick, and one. 

Cecily Hughes put the Gray Wolves' first point on the board in the 23rd minute on a second chance shot just three seconds after trying DC goalkeeper Taylor Osborne for the first time. Despite seven more shots at Osborne, it wasn't until the 35th minute that Payton Childers made it 2-0, Lourdes. Under two minutes later, Larabee put in her first of the night, which was soon followed by her second to cap off the first half's scoring.

In the second half — possession dominated by the Gray Wolves — Zoey Trout found a path to the goal to increase Lourdes lead by another score in the 58th minute. Nearly 20 minutes of play later, Larabee notched her third on a penalty kick. In the 83rd, 84th and 88th minutes, the Gray Wolves scored the final goals of the night to win 9-0, courtesy of Larabee for a fourth in the match, Karlie Heilman and Simona Iacobacci. 

The Turning Point

Defiance, who's defense saw improvement over its last six matches, began to struggle once Sophia Larabee notched her first goal in the game less than two minutes after the previous Gray Wolf score. Lourdes began to maintain possession and did not let up the remainder of the night.
