OLIVET, MICH. - The Defiance College women's soccer team hit the road on Wednesday for a match against Olivet College and ultimately fell to the Comets 6-0.
It did not take long for the hosts to break through as Olivet's Emma Essen found the back of the net in the 7th minute. The shots continued to pester junior goalkeeper Madi Bowman's (Eaton / Eaton) net, when ten minutes later the home side struck again. The Comets eventually scored three more times in the first half to take a 5-0 lead into halftime.
The second half showed signs of improvement for the Yellow Jackets as they held Olivet at bay for 23 minutes of the period. The Comet's Ann Fetzer scored her first goal in the 69th minute to give Olivet the game winning lead. The Yellow Jackets best scoring opportunity came in the second half, as a shot by junior Whitney Webb (Troy / Troy) hit the crossbar. Webb's shot tallied as the loan chance on goal for the Purple and Gold.
Defensively, Bowman contributed 11 saves on the day. Today's action increases the experienced net-minder's season save tally to 74, currently holding her place in second on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference save leaderboard.
The loss takes the Yellow Jacket's 2018 record to 0-7. The stretch of away games will continue for the squad as they next travel to Muskingum University on Saturday, September 22nd at 2:00 pm. The contest with the 3-4 Muskies will serve as the final match before HCAC play gets underway.
