DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College women's soccer team played their third consecutive home game on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets matched up against Saint Mary's College (Ind.) and ultimately fell to the Belles by a final score of 2-0.
The two sides matched up fairly evenly during the first period of play. Neither team was able to find the back of the net as they went into halftime tied. Defiance created a wonderfully developed goal scoring chance in the 58th minute as junior Whitney Webb (Troy / Troy) played a cross into the box. Malia Ferry (Milford / Milford) took the shot on a volley from just inside the 18-yard box. Ferry's strike almost found the back of the net as the Saint Mary's keeper was at full stretch to push the ball out for a corner kick.
Saint Mary's broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute as Maya Cole hit a shot from distance that found its way over the outstretched arms of Defiance goalkeeper Madi Bowman (Eaton/Eaton). The Yellow Jackets did not lose their hope as they continued to create chances throughout the second half. In the 69th minute, Saint Mary's was able to find the back of the net once again and gained a 2-0 advantage.
On the day the Purple and Gold recorded three shots on goal from Ferry, Kat Wicher (Toledo / Whitmer), and Katie Settich (Huber Heights / Chaminade Julienne). Defensively Bowman tallied five saves in the 90 minutes in net.
The Yellow Jackets are next in action Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1:00 pm as they travel to Heidelberg.
