DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance College women's soccer team shut out Earlham (Ind.) College, 1-0, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game and home finale at the Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
Defiance (3-14, 2-6 HCAC) started out the first half with a shot from sophomore Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green) that was blocked by the Earlham (1-11-2, 0-7-1) defense in the first two minutes of play. Following Memmer's shot, freshman Addy Cooper (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers) took a hard shot off the rebound, but missed just wide. Eight minutes into the game Cooper took a shot on goal that was saved by the Quaker goalkeeper. DC kept the shots coming and got on the scoreboard when senior Jillian Crowell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Plainwell) scored her first goal of the season at the 9:35 minute mark, with an assist from Cooper, to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead. The lone goal would be all the scoring after the first 45 minutes as the Jackets led 1-0 at the intermission.
The Jacket defense played hard the entire second half, keeping the Quakers from scoring any goals. The Jacket offense continued to take shots when they had opportunities. Senior Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas/Lockhart) tallied the final shot on goal for DC in the second period, but it was saved by the goalkeeper late in the game. The goal by DC in the first half proved to be all that was needed to decide a winner as the Yellow Jackets claimed the 1-0 victory.
Senior June Delgreco started and played the entire game for DC in net. While in net she allowed no goals against and had five saves to help the Jackets post their second shutout of the season.
Defiance will be traveling to Hanover, Ind. to take on Hanover (Ind.) College on Saturday (Oct. 31) for their final game of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
