ANDERSON, IND.- The Defiance women's soccer team broke an eight game winless streak with an overtime victory against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Anderson (Ind.) University, 1-0, tonight in Anderson, Ind.
Throughout the first half of play both teams remained scoreless despite Anderson (6-5, 2-2 HCAC) outshooting Defiance (2-11, 1-3 HCAC), 18-1, in the period. Strong defensive effort by the Yellow Jackets, led by senior goalkeeper June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) who made eight saves in the first 45 minutes, kept the Ravens from producing a goal. Sophomore Katie McGlacken (Canton, Mich./Canton) took the only shot for the Defiance offense in the first half at the 35:07 minute mark, but it was saved by the Raven goalkeeper as the teams headed into intermission in a scoreless tie.
The second half mirrored the first half, as neither team could find the back of the net. DC was held to one shot during the final half of regulation which came off the foot of sophomore Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green) at the 49:06 minute mark. Memmer's shot was blocked by the Raven defense. Anderson kept the shots coming adding 24 more attempts to their game total, but Delgreco stopped all eight shots that found their way on net as the second half concluded in a 0-0 tie, forcing overtime.
The game looked to be headed to a possible second overtime period until 8:13 into the frame when Memmer got a shot past the Raven netminder to end the game and clinch a 1-0 victory. The goal was Memmer's team-leading fifth of the season.
Anderson totaled 50 shots in the game and Delgreco finished with a total of 22 saves, a career high. She also claimed her second win of the season.
