
Five Second Half Goals Gives DC Loss Against Manchester

DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance College women's soccer team dropped a loss to Manchester (Ind.) University, 5-1, in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference home opener at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
The Yellow Jackets (1-10, 0-2 HCAC) scored their first goal when sophomore Katie McGlacken (Canton, Mihc./Canton) soared a shot past the Spartan keeper at the 11:58 minute mark. The Jacket defense was able to hold Manchester (3-6-1, 1-0-1 HCAC) from scoring throughout the first half. The DC offense took five more shots, but could not tally any more goals. Senior Jillian Crowell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Plainwell) took three shots, freshman Claire Stockwell (Union, Ky./Larry A. Ryle) and sophomore Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green) each had one shot a piece. But the Jackets went into the locker room with a lead of 1-0.
The second half took off in a different fashion than the Yellow Jackets expected. The Spartans produced all five of their goals in the final 45 minutes of play. Manchester scored back-to-back goals at the 57:07 and 59:19 minute marks to put Defiance down 2-1 and never looked back. Manchester tacked on additional scores during the 74th, 77th and 80th minutes to complete the five unanswered goal scoring streak and prevail with a 5-1 come-from-behind victory.
Senior June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) started in the net for the Yellow Jacekts and played the first 81:20 minutes of the game before sophomore Meredith Remy (Mansfield/Ontario) came in for the remaining eight minutes. Delgreco recorded 10 saves in net and had five goals against. Remy did not have any saves or goals against.
Up next for Defiance, the Yellow Jackets will host Franlkin (Ind.) College in a HCAC game on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Winsper-Knobel Field. The game will be part of a soccer doubleheader with the DC men's team. The women will kick the day off at 1 p.m., followed by the men against the Grizzilies at 3:30 p.m.
