DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance women's soccer team fell short against Oberlin College with a final score of 4-0 at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
The Yellow Jacket (1-4) defense battled all night against the Yeowomen (2-2-1), but could not overcome their attacks on the offensive and defensive sides. Almost five minutes into the game, Oberlin scored their first goal at the 4:45 minute mark to grab the early lead. Defiance had some scoring opportunities in the opening period with shots produced by senior Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas/Lockhart), freshman Addy Cooper (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers), and sophomore Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green). Islas' shot was on net, but it was saved by the Oberlin goalkeeper. The lone Yeowomen goal was the only scoring in the first half as the Yellow Jackets trailed, 1-0, at the break.
In the second half, the DC defense fought off multiple shot opportunities, but the Yeowomen tallied three more goals in the period. The Yeowomen added scores during the 56th, 72nd and 76th minutes to increase the margin to 4-0 and clinch the shutout.
The Yellow Jackets split time in the net between senior June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) and sophomore Meredith Remy (Mansfield/Ontario). Delgreco started the first and second half and played 81:31. She ended the game with nine saves and allowed four goals. Remy came off the bench and played the final 8:29 and had two saves.
Continuing the home stretch, DC will host Kenyon College on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. at Winsper-Knobel Field.
