DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance women's soccer team snapped their losing streak with the first win of the season against the Bethany (W. Va.) College Bison with a score of 2-1 at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
Bethany (1-2) struck early in the first half needing just 40 seconds to get on the scoreboard with a goal to grab an early 1-0 lead. Defiance (1-3) tried their turn at evening the score later in the half with three shots on goal by junior Eryn Porter (Defiance) and freshman Addy Cooper (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers), but all three scoring opportunities were saved by the Bison netminder. The DC defense took away shot opportunities for Bethany with their hard work throughout the game. Shortly after, sophomore Kassie Memmer kept the offensive momentum going with a piar of prime opportunities, but missed once wide and once high. Late in the period, Defiance found themselves on a break away and Porter took her shot, but it was saved by the goalkeeper once again to hold the Yellow Jackets at bay and keep a 1-0 advantage at the break.
The persistant offensive attack continued for DC in the second half which led to goal by Memmer at the 47:08 minute mark to even the game at 1-1. Memmer's goal was assisted by senior Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas/Lockhart). Late in the half, Memmer struck again with the go-ahead score during the 77th minute, with an assist by Cooper, that put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 2-1. The goal marked her fourth of the season and has scored every goal for Defiance so far this season. The defense then began to take over the game and prevented Bethany from netting a possible game-tying goal the rest of the way as DC went on to claim the 2-1 victory.
In goal for Defiance, was senior June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood). Delgreco performed in the net for the entire match and made some great plays, earning herself eight saves on the night and only allowing the lone goal early on.
Up next, Defiance will be taking on Oberlin College tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, Sept. 13) at 4 p.m. at Winsper-Knobel Field.
