Throughout the first half Defiance (0-3) and Saint Vincent (1-3) fought long and hard to gain possession of the ball. The DC offense started out with a few quick shots on goal. Senior Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas/Lockhart) and sophomore Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green) both had strong scoring chances, but could not get the shot past the Bearcat netminder. At the 37:13 minute mark however, Memmer capitalized with a goal that included an assist from freshman Addy Cooper (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers), that gave the Yellow Jackets an 1-0 lead. But the advantage was short lived as Saint Vincent responded quickly, scoring their first goal less than 40 seconds later evening the mark at 1-1 going into the intermission.
The second half did not go as expected for the Yellow Jackets as the Bearcats put up seven unanswered scores. SVC tallied its first goal of the period just under five minutes in and the flood gates opened for the Bearcats offensively. Defiance continued to defend their opponent, but could not produce on the offensive side. The Yellow Jackets did create some scoring opportunities throughout the half, but would not capitalize as SVC cruised to the 8-1 final.
In net for Defiance, senior June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) played the majority of the game and had four goals against and earned herself three saves. Sophomore Meredith Remy (Mansfield/Ontario) replaced Delgreco at the 63:13 mark to finish the game and gave up four goals, but had three saves.
Defiance will host Bethany (W.Va.) College on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Winsper-Knobel Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
