TIFFIN, OHIO- The Defiance College women's soccer team fell short in the season opener against Heidelberg University with a score of 0-3 at Hoernemann Stadium.
The Yellow Jacket (0-1) defense fought long and hard all night against Heidelberg (1-0), but could not overcome a strong attack by the Sutdent Princes on both the offensive and defensive side. Sophomore Kassie Memmer (Bowling Green) had all three of her shots on goal in tonight's match, but unfortunately couldn't find the back of the net. Freshman Maizy Lepkowski (Perrysburg) had the second most shots on goal with two, and junior Eryn Porter (Defiance) had one shot on goal.
Following a scoreless first half, Heidelberg had an exciting second period scoring all three of its goals. The goals were scored at the 49:48, 58:03, and 88:05 minute marks and turned away all remaining shots by DC to go on to the 3-0 shutout.
The Yellow Jackets split time in net between goalkeepers Meredith Remy (Mansfield/Ontario) and June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood). Delgreco was the starter for tonight's match and performed well with five saves and three goals allowed. Remy came in for 16:50 and earned herself four saves on the night.
Up next for the Defiance women's soccer team will be the Purple & Gold Classic this weekend at home. Defiance will play the first game on Friday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. against Willmington College.
