Lady Jackets fall to Transylvania 1-0 on senior day
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College women's soccer team fell to Transylvania on senior day, giving up a second half goal in a, 1-0, loss at Winsper-Knobel Field.
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College women's soccer team fell to Transylvania on senior day, giving up a second half goal in a, 1-0, loss at Winsper-Knobel Field.
Transylvania (11-3-2, 5-1-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) put early pressure on Defiance (5-10-2, 2-4-1 HCAC) and continued that pressure through the first 45 minutes. The Pioneers out shot DC in the first half 9-1, with Claire Turner (Medina, Ohio / Cloverleaf) making the a save on the only one to reach the target.
The Defiance coaching staff made some halftime adjustments that sparked the DC players. The Yellow Jackets took a pair of early shots to start off the half. Smith was able to get behind the defense with one of the chances and put a strike on net, that was turned away with a save.
DC continued to put the pressure on throughout the half, forcing Transylvania to make five saves in the second 45 minutes.
However, it was the Pioneers' Carley Williams who was able to breakthrough with the only goal of the game, scoring in the 67th minute. Williams was able to put back a rebound by Turner to score the go-ahead goal
Defiance was out shot by Transy 21-8 in the match, with seven of their shots on target to five for the Yellow Jackets.
Kim Bingley (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf), Bibiana Parra (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) and Karly Smith (Parma, Ohio / Parma) were honored by coaches and teammates before the game. They, along with their teammates, also sang the "Star-Spangled Banner" before kickoff.
Head Coach Alex Van der Sluijs said of his three departing seniors, "We will miss these three seniors on and off the field next season. They have been a fun group to have and you always hate to see seniors like these have to leave."
The Lady Jackets will play their next to last game on Tuesday at Bluffton. Kickoff is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
