DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College Women's Soccer team fell to the Manchester Spartans 1-0 Tuesday afternoon at Winsper-Knobel Field.
The Yellow Jackets (3-9-2, 0-3-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) were unable to contain late pressure from the Spartans (7-6-1, 3-1-0 HCAC) attack and gave up the deciding goal in the 82nd minute. Sofie Tzortzinis collected the ball after a few headers back and forth and was able to put a shot past DC keeper Clara Zamora from just outside the box.
Defiance had a chance in the 88th minute to tie the game back up, but Karly Smith's shot under close defense went straight to Manchester keeper Emily Wilmann.
The Yellow Jackets started strong in the match, putting four shots toward goal in the first seven minutes. Smith had a pair of chances in just over a minute, but Wilmann was able to make the saves and keep the game level.
In net for Defiance, Zamora handled several chances for Manchester. The Spartans had 14 shots toward Zamora in the first 80 minutes of the match, stopping all seven that were on target.
Zamora finished with a career-high eight saves in the match, topping five saves in a game against Muskingum earlier this season.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday with a match up at home against the Franklin Grizzlies. The game is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
