DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Lady Jackets opened up HCAC play Saturday against Mount St. Joe's with a disappointing, 2-1, loss at home. The loss drops DC to 3-7-1 on the year and 0-1 in HCAC play.
Defiance entered the game with a winning streak over MSJ, but the Lions were able to put a stop to the streak and avenge the losses from the past two years.
Victoria Heflin was able to get things going very quickly for the Lions, scoring a header off a misplayed ball from the Defiance defense just 90 seconds after the opening whistle.
DC was able to settle down though and put the pressure back on, taking six of the next eight shots in the game. However, both defenses and goalies were able to buckle down and hold the game score to 1-0 at the half.
12 minutes into the second half, junior defender Chelsie Moyer (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) was able to find goal from 30 yards out off a free kick. MSJ's goalie was able to make the stop but in doing so, stumbled backward and the ball crossed the plain tying the score up 1-1. The goal was Moyer's first in her career.
The teams both started playing physical defense turning away shots by each other and keeping the score at one apiece.
Unfortunately, MSJ was able to strike again, this time with just 90 seconds until the final whistle. Katie Jauch scored off a free kick from 20 yards out.
DC outshot the Lions 21-14 and 9-7 on goal. Defiance plays again next at home on Tuesday against Earlham. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm.
