TIFFIN, Ohio – The Lady Jackets fought hard to a 1-1 tie against in-state rival Heidelberg Wednesday night in the first midweek game of the season for Defiance College (2-2-1).
Great defense was on display from the Yellow Jackets and Heidelberg (0-3-1) in the 110 minute contest. The two schools combined for only 11 shots in the game, seven from Defiance and four from Heidelberg. However, both teams picked up a few quality chances as each team was able to find the target in all but one of their shots.
After a scoreless first half, Bibiana Parra was able to strike first, giving Defiance the lead on a penalty kick. Just over 20 minutes into the second half, Karly Smith was fouled in the box and Parra put the resulting penalty attempt in, giving th Lady Jackets the lead.
Neither squad had much of a chance until Heidelberg's Christina Neal ripped a shot from just outside the box with just over three minutes remaining in the second half. Definace's keeper Clara Zamora, who was making her collegiate debut, was able to get a hand on the ball, but the shot stayed under the bar and into the goal, tying the game at 1-1.
The Lady Jackets continued to push in the overtime frames. Defiance had a corner kick in the first overtime, but was unable to make a shot out of the set piece. In the second overtime session, Erica Islas and Smith each put a shot on target, but were unable to find the back of the goal.
The draw is Defiance's first of the season. The Lady Jackets will return to action Saturday with the first of two games over the weekend. DC plays at Capital on Saturday with a scheduled start time of 1 p.m. The Lady Jackets will then play at Muskingum on Sunday with a noon start time.
