DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Lady Yellow Jackets won their first game of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Westminster College Titans Sunday afternoon at Winsper-Knobel Field.
In front of a crowd of just over 200 people, Defiance and Westminster played about as close as you can for 89 of the minutes in the game. Just over one minute was the difference in the game, as the Lady Yellow Jackets were able to strike twice in just 63 seconds.
Maegan Redick (Lima, Ohio) scored from just outside the six yard line as the ball was knocked around by both teams inside Westminster's goal box. When Redick finally got her foot on it, she fired a shot into the back of the net at the 18:30 mark to put Defiance up 1-0.
Shortly after play we resumed from the goal, Defiance again got into a breakaway situation. Karly Smith (Parma, Ohio) put a nice pass to Erica Islas (Lockhart, Texas) who was able to beat one defender and fire a kick into the left side of the goal just 63 seconds after the Yellow Jackets' first goal.
Both teams played great defense the rest of the way. Westminster was able to put up 15 shots with six being on goal. Defiance was able to put up just nine shots and four on goal, though half of those found the net to seal the victory for the Lady Yellow Jackets.
For the second time in his career, head coach Alex VanderSluijs was victorious in both the men's and women's soccer game. The last time was September 29 of last season at conference rival Mount St. Joseph.
The women play next in the Marietta Tournament against Bethany (Sept. 7, 3 p.m.) and Wooster (Sept. 8, 1 p.m.).
