PONTIAC, Mich. – The Defiance women's soccer team had a nice change of scenery from this weekend's storm-delayed match, as it traveled up to Michigan and defeated the Rochester Warriors 1-0 on their indoor field. DC gets back on the winning track and improves to 5-3-2 with the victory.
Through the first half, the game was at zeros, as neither team could knock one in the net. Both squads had their opportunities, as the Jackets racked up five shots and the Warriors notched four, but neither could convert.
Then in the second period, DC started to gain the momentum by getting its offensive attack going and outshooting Rochester 6-to-2 along with two corner kicks to none. Finally in the 78th minute, Defiance cracked the Warrior defense when sophomore Genelle Castro made a smooth pass to junior Karly Smith who placed the ball in the lower right 90 for the 1-0 Jacket lead.
The goal was Smith's third in her last four games, as well as it being her eighth point in her last five.
DC packed it in after the score and closed out the game by holding off Rochester, as it returned to Defiance with a hard earned road victory. The Warriors drop to 1-9-1 with the defeat.
The Lady Jackets have a nice four-day break before they return to action Saturday, September 29 when they travel down to Cincinnati to take on Mt. St. Joseph in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener. The match is set for 12:00 p.m.
