DEFIANCE, Ohio – In a match that was neck and neck for 80 solid minutes, the Defiance women's soccer team dug deep and blew open the game with a trio of goals from the 83rd to 86th minute to defeat Heidelberg. The victory gives the squad its first three game winning streak since 2007 and Coach Van der Sluijs's first in his career with DC.
The first half was an evenly matched battle as Heidelberg came out with its A-game, as they matched the Yellow Jackets step for step. In the period, each squad had its opportunities at the net, as both teams registered eight shots. Both goalkeepers were kept busy with Heidelberg having four saves, while DC saved three and the match headed into intermission at 0-0.
After the break, DC came out with that extra pep in its step, as they slowly wore down the Berg with an aggressive offensive attack. In the first 25 minutes of the second period, the Jackets mostly controlled the ball on the visitor's side of the field, as they notched five shots at the net to Heidelberg's one.
Then in the 83rd minute, junior Karly Smith broke away from the pack, as she was one-on-one with the goalie and chipped it high into the net out of the visiting goalies reach for the 1-0 DC lead. It was her second goal on the season, as well as being the second game in a row she notched a score.
With the pressure lifted off the Lady Jackets shoulders, the floodgates opened as sophomore Maegan Redick scored a pair of goals in the next two minutes. 50 seconds after the first goal, Karly Smith got the ball into the Berg box and sent a beautiful cross pass to Redick that she snuck in the lower right corner for her second score of the season.
But Redick was not finished because just over a minute later, she beat the defender down the right sideline and took the ball just inside the box and rocketed a goal into the upper left 90 for season score number three and a 3-0 DC lead.
Defiance then used up the clock, as they kept the Berg away from the net and earned the 3-0 victory. DC improved to 4-2-2 with the win and Heidelberg drops another to fall to 0-6-0.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, September 22 when they host the Wilmington Quakers for homecoming weekend. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
