Bubnick Drains a Pair of Goals to Lead Defiance Over Oberlin

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The DC women's soccer team moved over .500 for the first time since the beginning of the 2009-10 season, with a 3-1 victory over the Oberlin Yeowomen. The Jackets were led by sophomore midfielder Lindsay Bubnick who scored twice and notched an assist.

Defiance started off slow, as the Yeowomen were on the attack for a good portion of the first period. Oberlin was up in shot attempts through 40 minutes, as they registered eight to DC's five. But then in the 42nd minute, a loose ball in the visitor box squibbed out to Bubnick and she rocketed a shot into the upper right corner for her third score on the season. The Jackets grabbed the early advantage at 1-0 and took that score into half.

The Yeowomen did not let the late first half goal get to them as the scrappy bunch came right out of intermission to score a goal just over three minutes in. Oberlin's Megan Michel tied the game when she got the ball on a breakaway and chipped a shot high into the right corner, just out of DC goalkeeper Claire Turner's reach.

However, the Yellow Jackets remained poised and recovered from the score, as they kept the offensive attack on the Yeowomen. In the 65th minute, Bubnick took a free kick from midfield and just aimed away at the goal, and junior Karly Smith was in the right place at the right time, as she redirected it into the back of the net to put Defiance back on top at 2-1.

With the Oberlin team wearing down, Bubnick sealed the victory for DC in the 78th minute, when she scored her second goal of the game on an amazing free kick from just shy of midfield. The score was her fourth on the season as she now leads the team in goals with four, and points with nine.

The win improves Defiance's record to 3-2-2 on the year, while Oberlin falls to 0-6-1.

DC returns to action Wednesday, September 19 when they host Heidelberg at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field. The match is slated for 2 p.m.
