Upset Bid Falls Short for DC

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Defiance College women's soccer team could not hold on to its early lead, falling 2-1 to Rose-Hulman on Saturday, November 1. The match wraps up the 2008 campaign for the Jackets, who finished the season 5-12-1 overall and 2-6 in the HCAC.

DC grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute of the match, as Hannah Davis scored off a free kick for her first goal of the season. The Defiance defense kept the Engineers at bay for the remainder of the half to keep the Jackets on top through the first 45 minutes of play, as goalkeeper Colleen Cross recorded eight saves in the period.

Rose-Hulman ruined DC's upset bid in the final period, scoring twice to help keep its HCAC Tournament hopes alive. The Engineers scored a goal in the 73rd and 77th minutes to pull out the victory.

The Jackets, who were outshot 23-6 in the match, were led by Jordanne Buehrer's two shots, while Davis, Alexandra Johnson, Stephanie Lieto and Lauren Ranalli each had a shot for Defiance. Cross, who ranks second in the HCAC with 148 saves this season, finished with 13 saves on the day.
