Women's Basketball falls to Kalamazoo on the road
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - In a battle of winless teams, the Kalamazoo College Hornets defeated the Yellow Jackets 67-44 at the Anderson Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets (1-8) opened the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back as they would lead wire-to-wire for the victory over the Yellow Jackets (0-9).
TURNING POINT
The Hornets opened the game on a 9-0 run over the first 3:17 of action. A three-pointer from Addy Allen put the Yellow Jackets on the board and they would settle in after that. Despite that, the Yellow Jackets still found themselves trailing between 10 and 15 points throughout most of the game. Leading 33-24 at halftime, Kalamazoo came out in the third quarter and extended their lead to 39-24.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Yellow Jackets got off to a slow start and were unable to overcome the early deficit. Addy Allen knocked down two three-pointers in the first quarter which allowed DC to hang around as they faced only a five-point deficit a few times during the opening period before Kalmazoo scored the last bucket of the quarter to lead by seven, 17-10.
Another three by Allen kept the Yellow Jackets afloat but the Hornets extended their lead back out to ten midway through the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets ended the first half with a little burst as DC got buckets from Aliza Clark and Zadria King. However, a big three by Kalamazoo's Ruby Hogan allowed the home squad to take a 33-24 lead going into halftime.
Just like they did to open the game, the Hornets once again came out of the gates hot and would quickly extend their lead to 15 3:49 into the second half as the Yellow Jackets were scoreless for the first 4:47 of the second half before a Teagan Hunt three snapped the scoring drought.
The Hornets finished the game with a strong fourth quarter, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 20-9. Kalamazoo grabbed 50 rebounds, scored 20 second chance points, and 36 in the paint.
