
Yellow Jackets fall to Adrian at home
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College women's basketball team dropped a 76-47 decision to Adrian Wednesday night at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
The Bulldogs improve to 2-1 and the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-3.
Adrian scored first in the game on a layup by Ashlyn Weatherly and the Bulldogs would lead the entire game. The visitors jumped out to a 5-0 lead and a jump shot by Karrie Smith got the Yellow Jackets on the board. The Bulldogs shot 60% from the floor in the first quarter and scored 22 of their 26 points in the paint to take a 26-16 lead after the first ten minutes.
The Yellow Jackets had a rough shooting second quarter, finishing 2-for-13 for 15% as they had their lowest scoring quarter of the night. The Bulldogs didn't shoot much better, but had 11 more rebounds and outscored DC 17-7 in the quarter. Katlin Barrett started the second quarter with a free throw and then the Bulldogs exploded for 13 straight points to take a 39-17 and that scoring run lasted for nearly six minutes. Two free throws from Ali Mowen halted the run and the Bulldogs would take a commanding 43-23 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs never slowed down in the second half and outscored the Yellow Jackets 33-24. The Yellow Jackets went on a mini 5-0 run to make it 55-34 as Karrie Smith drained a three and Aliza Clark made a jump shot. After a Teagan Hunt three, the Bulldogs finished the third quarter with a mini 5-0 run of their own and led 62-37 heading into the final quarter.
The teams traded missed baskets to begin the second quarter and Adrian's Darby Lienerth hit a jumper 2:09 into the quarter. The Bulldogs used a 7-0 run late in the fourth quarter to take a 32-point lead, their largest of the game. The last points in the game was a made three by Ali Mowen.
The Bulldogs did the majority of their damage in the paint as 56 of their 76 points came from inside. Adrian also outrebounded DC, 57-34. The Yellow Jackets shot 21% from the game compared to 48% for the visitors.
Zadria King, Taylor Bates, Karrie Smith, and Kaiya Albert each finished with eight points and Albert grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Katlin Barrett recorded the only block of the game for the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action Saturday afternoon at the College of Wooster. Tip-off will be at noon at Timken Gymnasium.
