Coach Hersha earns first collegiate victory as Yellow Jackets use strong second half to down St. Mary's

The Defiance College Women's Basketball team earned their first win of the season in a non-conference game this Sunday against St. Mary's (IND.) at the Angela Athletic & Wellness Complex in Notre Dame, IN. The final score was 70-60. Head Coach Rod Hersha earned his first collegiate win today as well.

Inside The Numbers

  • Seniors Taylor Day and Taylor Steinbrunner led the Yellow Jackets in scoring, each recording a total of 15 points. 

  • Junior Mckenzie Cooper grabbed 8 rebounds for Defiance. 

  • As a team, the Yellow Jackets shot 15-16 from the Free Throw Line, shooting overall 93.8%, their highest of the season thus far. 

  • Defiance shot and made 25-68 in Field Goal Attempts/Makes, shooting 36.8%. 

  • Julia Shutz led the way for the Belles, collecting 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. 

  • Athena Samson also added 14 points and 13 rebounds for St Mary's. 

  • The Belle's shot 13-18  from the Free Throw Line, shooting 72.7% overall. 

  • St. Mary's went 21-69 in Field Goal Attempts/Makes,  shooting 30.4%.

The Difference

  • At the end of the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets were down 13-17. The Jackets were able to close the gap and bring the game within 2 points heading into halftime. The score was 28-30.  

  • The Jackets were able to gain the lead late in the third quarter off of a made layup by Senior Nicole Sims. 

  • Using momentum, the Yellow Jackets were able to outscore the Belle's in the fourth quarter en route to a 70-60 win. 

  • Both teams recorded a total of 16 Personal Fouls. 

  • Defiance recorded 16 assists to St. Mary's 13. 

  • Defiance outscored St. Mary's 42-30 in the second half.

  • The Yellow Jackets will kick off conference action, Wednesday, November 30 at the Karl H. Weaner Center as they take on Manchester.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
