Late basket lifts Kenyon over Yellow Jackets

The Defiance college women's basketball team kicked off the 2022-2023 season this evening against Kenyon at the Lowry Center in Gambier, OH. The Yellow Jackets lost in heartbreaking fashion, falling 55-54.

Inside The Numbers

• Senior Taylor Day led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points and recorded a double double by grabbing 11 rebounds. 

• Senior Taylor Steinbrunner chipped in 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

• As a team, the Yellow Jackets went 19-of-56 shooting overall 33.9%.

• The Yellow Jackets shot 13-20 from the Free Throw line shooting overall 65%.

• Katie Orefice led Kenyon with 22 points. 

• Claudia Cooke grabbed 10 rebounds for Kenyon and totaled 18 points.

• Overall Kenyon shot 19-63 from the floor shooting 30.2%

• As a team, Kenyon went from 4-24 from the 3pt line, shooting 16.7%.

The Difference

• After leading 12-10 following the first quarter, Kenyon outscored Defiance 19-16 in the second quarter to take a 29-28 lead into halftime. 

• The contest went back and forth with a total of 20 lead changes between both teams.

• Kenyon outscored Defiance in the paint, 26-22. 

• Katie Orefice scored the last 2 points at the 5 second mark to win the contest.
