Big shots help lead women's basketball past Franklin

The Defiance women's basketball team defeated Franklin in HCAC play on Saturday evening to earn their second consecutive victory.

• Junior Taylor Steinbrunner and senior Taylor Day tied for the team lead with 11 points apiece.
• Day also logged six rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Steinbrunner had four rebounds and two steals.
• Junior Kylie Brinkman added 10 points along with four rebounds and four assists.
• Senior Nysha Speed contributed eight points and a team-leading nine rebounds.
• Junior Lexie Sparks chipped in eight points off the bench
• As a team, Defiance shot 15-of-53 (.283) from the floor and 8-of-17 (.471) from behind the arc.
• The Grizzlies were led by Destinee Cross, who recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while also registering five blocks.
• Sarah O'Day added 10 points from Franklin while Jessica Nix added nine points, eight rebounds, and four steals.
• As a team, Franklin shot 20-of-57 (.351) from the floor and 2-of-13 (.154) from behind the arc.

The Difference

• The Yellow Jackets held a 14-9 lead after a tightly contested first quarter of play.
• After a second quarter in which the teams combined for only 16 total points, the Yellow Jackets held a slight 21-18 lead.
• The Grizzlies outscored the Yellow Jackets 25-19 in the third quarter to take the lead heading into the final frame.
• Defiance rallied in the fourth quarter thanks in part to two big three-pointers from Steinbrunner and some clutch free-throw shooting to take the game 65-60.
• The Grizzlies dominated the paint outscoring the Yellow Jackets 30-8.
• Franklin slightly outrebounded Defiance 34-31.
• The turnover battle was close with Defiance holding a slight lead 24-22.
• The DC bench outscored Franklin's 19-17.
