Yellow Jackets win game two in walk-off fashion to earn split against Rose-Hulman
DEFIANCE, Ohio - In the bottom of the seventh with one out, Brooke Silcox sent a single up the middle and Anika Craft scored on the play to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 victory in game two as DC earned a split against Rose-Hulman Sunday afternoon at Sal Hench Field
The Yellow Jackets moved to 7-14 overall and 3-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Rose-Hulman is now 12-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Game one (6 inn) (L, 9-0)
It was all Rose-Hulman in the first game as they earned the run rule victory. The Fightin' Engineers scored twice in the second and tacked on another in the third for a 3-0 lead. They then exploded for six in the sixth to put the run rule into effect. The sixth inning featured six runs on five hits.
Aubrey Smith shut down the DC offense and held them to just three hits in the first game while striking out seven. The Yellow Jackets got a one out single by Laney Grimwood in the seventh but couldn't put together a rally.
Grimwood, Anika Craft, and Payton Mallett had one hit each to account for DC's three of the game. Savannah McCoy (2-6) took the loss on the mound and pitched 5.1 innings while allowing four earned runs and struck out two. Emma Rodgers gave up five runs on four hits with one walk in 0.2 innings of work.
Game two (W, 2-1)
Pitching on both sides was the theme in game two. Rose-Hulman got a one out double in the top of the first from their game one starter Aubrey Smith and she later scored the game's first run with two outs. With the bases loaded and one out, Rose-Hulman pulled starter Phoebe Worstell from the game and went back to Smith who pitched and earned the win in game one. Brooke Silcox hit a high pop up that looked like it was going to fall in shallow in the outfield, but the wind brought it all the way back to second base and an infield fly was called. Savannah McCoy scored the game-tying run on the play and Payton Mallett grounded out to end the inning as the game remained tied at one.
The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases again in the sixth inning with just one out but Aubrey Smith once again escaped the jam. With one out in the seventh, Anika Craft singled to left and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. That was a key play as two pitches later she scored on the single from Silcox to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.
Craft improved to 4-2 on the mound with the complete game effort on the mound and struck out two while allowing one earned run. Grimwood, Silcox, Craft, Mallett, and Madison Guggenbiller each recorded one hit.
