Softball falls to Concordia Chicago in season opener
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Defiance College softball team was defeated by Concordia Chicago 16-2 in five innings in what was the season opener for both teams. The Yellow Jackets were scheduled to play another game this afternoon, but mother nature had other plans.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cougars (1-0) took advantage of two Defiance errors and plated four in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. The DC offense was shut down in the second inning and the Cougars plated a single run on a wild pitch in the top of the third to extend their lead to 5-0.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1) put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Laney Grimwood and Payton Mallett smacked back-to-back RBI doubles. Grimwood's double plated Savanah Bergman and Grimwood scored on Mallet's double. DC trailed 5-2 entering the fourth inning. The hit and RBI by Mallett were the first of her college career.
Any momentum the Yellow Jackets had gained was quickly erased as Concordia Chicago plated nine runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead. The Cougars tacked on two more in the fifth, giving them 11 runs over the final two innings of play.
Savannah McCoy (0-1) got the start on the mound and pitched 3.0 innings, struck out one and allowed five runs with only three being earned.
Emma Rodgers made her collegiate debut on the mount and pitched 0.1 innings. Hailey Johnson also made her collegiate debut on the mount and pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing four runs with just two being earned.
Savanah Bergman had the other hit for DC in the game.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action again tomorrow in Kissimmee against Simmons at 3:15 p.m. and Wheaton at 5:15 p.m.
