Yellow Jackets Split in Pitcher's Duel
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College softball team finished the afternoon in a split, taking game one against Adrian College 3-2 before falling 3-1 in game two against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in Defiance, Ohio.
The Yellow Jackets opened up the scoring in game one in the first inning, tallying a run early as Brooke Gostomsky crossed home plate on a Mariah Huff single deep to center field. Adrian wasted little time to equalize, adding a run of their own in the top of the second.
DC would go on to pull ahead in the third on a Perry single, scoring Gostomsky and Kaity Kuhn building a 3-1 advantage on the Bulldogs. Adrian responded with a single run in the top of the sixth but strong pitching from Sydney Zeuch would get the Purple and Gold out of the inning with the lead still intact, allowing them to seal the game 3-2.
It would be University of Wisconsin-Platteville that struck first in the final game of the triple-header, notching a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Finally, after 3.5 innings of silence, the Yellow Jackets added their first run in the contest on a Perry RBI, scoring Gostomsky.
UW-Platteville extended their lead in the seventh to give them a 3-1 advantage that would carry them to the victory in the nightcap.
The Purple and Gold are back in cleats on Wednesday, March 28 as they travel to Wilmington College to take on the Quakers. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:30 PM.
