Defiance battles at Case Western Reserve’s Si Ostrach Duals
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Defiance College's wrestling program traveled to Case Western Reserve for the Dr. Si Ostrach Duals held at the Vaele Athletic Fieldhouse on Saturday.
As a team, Defiance lost all four duals but has some solid individual efforts throughout the program. Seth Majewski, Rigo Villa and Joey Perez all went unbeaten during the four duals for Defiance. Alejandro Castro went 3-1 and Kerringten Martin went 2-2. Brent Eicher was among three Yellow Jackets to earn wins in exhibitions. Two of those exhibition winners picked up their first collegiate wins as Kliever Joseph defeated an opponent from Case Western at 141 with Lesley Fleurissaint at 285 during the St. John's Fisher dual.
The Yellow started the day against Penn College of Technology and dropped that dual as a team, 36-16. Seth Majewski, Alejandro Castro, Joey Perez and Rigo Villa all recorded wins for DC while six matchups went to Penn, including a no-contest at 174. Brent Eicher picked up a win by fall in an exhibition match in a battle at 157.
Defiance then met up with host Case Western and Majewski and Villa recorded victories. The duo earned seven points for the Yellow Jackets compared to 47 points in eight victories with forfeits at 125 and 174 for the Spartans. Kliever Joseph tangled in an exhibition at 141 and picked up his victory by fall in 3:50.
The third dual of the day for Defiance was a tighter affair with St. John's Fisher edging out a 30-22 win. Majewski and Villa each secured wins at 133 and 285 joined by Castro and Perez at 157 and 184. Kerringten Martin pinned his opponent in 1:05 to pick up another Jacket victory in that dual meet. Lesley Fleurissaint picked up his first win during this dual by pinning his 285 opponent in 1:55.
The Yellow Jackets finished the competition against Thiel and lost that dual, 30-21. Majewski, Castro, Martin and Villa all recorded wins along with Perez with a no-contest at 184. Defiance and Thiel each won five bouts but Thiel went the distance in the 157, 165, and 285 matches to award Defiance just three points each to create the nine-point victory.
The Defiance wrestlers travel to Wheaton, Ill. next weekend for the Pete Wilson Invitational. Friday's competition begins at 7 p.m. followed by an 11 a.m. start on Saturday.
