
Horvath leads Defiance in Steemer Showcase
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Defiance College took to the podium on multiple occasions Saturday at Wittenberg's annual Steemer Showcase, led by Mira Horvath and her first-place finish.
In last week's meet at the Ashland Collegiate Invitational, Horvath set a program record in the 300-meter dash with a flashing time of 42:67. Though not beating her recent record, the sophomore took first place in the event with a speed of 42:85, which still beat the previous top time set in 2013 by Kali George (42:47).
The 300 wasn't the only event Horvath found success in on Saturday. The women's 4x200 relay squad made up of Rakel Thompson, Israa Khamis, Shelby Clements and Horvath finished second with a time of 1:52:67.
Horvath, Thompson, Khamis, Clements and Zawadi Debola made up the Defiance women's 4x400 relay team, which took 7th with a time of 4:20:74. Debola competed in the women's 800-meter run with a 30th-place finish and a time of 2:35:84, and the duo of Tyjon Mance (52:37) and J'Vontae Barnes (53:40) in 10th and 19th place, respectively. Rounding out the running events was Eli Fortman in the men's 800-meter run who placed 5th overall with a time of 2:10:67.
Five field events featured Yellow Jackets. Finishers are as follows:
Women's shot put - Lynsey Pease, 34th place, 8.24 meters
Women's long jump - Amira Knight, 16th place, 3rd in first flight, 4.45 meters
Women's weight throw - Amanda Barnes, 16th place, 10.09 meters
Men's weight throw - David Heidelburg, 47th place, 11.13 meters

DC returns to action on Feb.8 at the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic in Allendale, Mich. Events begin at 10 a.m. in the Kelly Family Sports Center. Following this meet, the indoor track & field season will conclude in the WHAC Championship.
