
Men's golf launches spring season, defeated in duel by Holy Cross College
KODAK, Tenn. - The Defiance College men's golf team opened their spring schedule on Tuesday and were defeated by Holy Cross College in a duel match in preparation for this week's Island Pointe Intercollegiate hosted by the Yellow Jackets. With both programs fielding an A and B team of five golfers apiece, the two teams from Holy Cross owned the top of the team leaderboard for the day.
Playing at the par-72 Island Pointe Golf Club in Tennessee, Holy Cross B took the team title after shooting a 327. Holy Cross A finished second at 335 followed by Defiance's A squad at 346. Defiance B finished fourth at 403.
Jacob Palmer of Holy Cross finished first on the individual leaderboard with a 3-over 75. Three of the next four golfers were members of Holy Cross B who shot between 79 and 82.
The top Yellow Jacket in the field was freshman Sam Theissler in his DC debut. The Canadian finished fourth with a round of 82 with the help of birdies on the 11th and 14th holes. Jordan Walford and Brenden Garvin also broke 90 for DC with cards of 86 and 88, respectively. Zack Palmer and Bretton Basford rounded out DC Team A with finishes of 90 and 106.
Defiance B was headlined by Sam Boyles at 89 followed by a 93 from senior Zach Canterbury, who both played their first varsity rounds of the year. In addition to a 109 from Alex Moritz, Cooper Sloan and Brodee McMahan also made their college golf debuts with rounds of 112 and 116 in preparation for their first invitational play later this week.

The Yellow Jackets host the Island Pointe Intercollegiate alongside the DC women's program on at Island Pointe GC on Thursday and Friday. The first tee times are at 10 a.m. each day of the tournament.
