Walford leads Jackets at Irish Hills Invitational
TECUMSEH, Mich. - Defiance College men's golf competed in their second two-day tournament of the season on Friday and Saturday and finished 10th at Adrian's Irish Hills Invitational at Tecumseh Country Club.
The Yellow Jackets compiled combined rounds of 335 on Friday followed by 347 on Saturday for 682 on the weekend. Spring Arbor took the team title with a 599 to clear Calvin by five strokes while both schools had at least one round under 300 in the tournament.
Defiance's top golfer was Jordan Walford with a top-20 finish in the field of 57. The Thunder Bay native turned in DC's best round of the weekend on an opening-round 76. He followed with an 80 to finish tied for 18th with 156 shots on the tournament.
Zack Palmer had his best 36-hole performance with a 168 tournament to tie for 43rd. He started with an 81 on Friday and finished with an 87 on Saturday. Noah Leslie turned in cards of 89 and 87 for a 176. Bretton Basford and Alex Moritz each logged 184 strokes for the tournament.
The tournament medalist was Calvin's Greg Braun via a four-way playoff. He started with an opening-round 70 before taking a 79 on Saturday and beat out Spring Arbor's Blaze Tanner, Max Kraniak from Alma and Calvin teammate Dylan Clark who all finished at 149 through 36 holes.
Defiance's next tournament is on Tuesday at the Lourdes Invitational, which is the final tune-up before the fall season finale at the WHAC Fall Preview on Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
