Defiance (6-16, 5-10 HCAC) looked to make a statement early by jumping out a 12-5 advantage at the 16:21 mark of the first half following a jumper by Parker. The lead later grew to eight points, 16-8, before a 13-2 momentum swing by Bluffton (12-10, 5-10 HCAC) put the Beavers up by three points, 21-18, with 8:23 left in the period.

The Beavers went on to post their largest lead of the half of 13 points on two occasions, including a 39-26 margin at the 1:40 mark. The Yellow Jackets gained a little momentum of their own just before the end of the half with five straight points on a bucket by Parker and a triple by Holmes to narrow the gap to 39-31 at the intermission.
