GREENWOOD, Ind. – Defiance College's Anthony Brown was tabbed as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week after leading the Jackets to a pair of must-win victories and a spot in the HCAC Tournament. The award is the first in Brown's four-year career on the planks for DC.
Brown opened the week by scoring a game-high 22 points in a 55-53 win over Bluffton on Wednesday in front of a packed Karl H. Weaner Community Center, fueling a decisive 11-4 run with 10 points late in the game to give DC a 50-46 lead. The Glenview, Ill., native then led all players once again on Saturday, sinking four-of-five attempts from beyond the arc and ending with 18 points in just 21 minutes of a 70-68 Senior Day win over Franklin.
Brown averaged 20.0 points per game on the week and shot the ball at a sizzling 63.6-percent clip to help Defiance extend its regular season ending winning streak to six-straight games. The Jackets used the late-season turnaround to overcome a four-game deficit in the standings to Franklin with six games left in the regular season to clinch a spot in the postseason.
Brown and the Jackets (13-12, 9-9 HCAC) will take on Rose-Hulman (17-8, 11-7 HCAC) on Friday at 6:00 pm on the campus of Transylvania University in the first game of the 2012 HCAC Tournament. With a victory, DC would play Hanover (16-8, 12-6 HCAC) on Saturday at 5:00 pm with the winner advancing into Sunday's 2:00 pm championship contest.
